Indian Railways has launched a proactive initiative to tackle the issue of illegal vendors operating on train platforms across its network. Amid concerns over the quality and safety of food sold by unregistered vendors, the railway authorities have introduced a uniform dress code system for vendors at various stations.
Initially piloted on 99 platforms within the Jabalpur zone, this initiative has now been expanded to the Kota division as part of a broader effort to enhance passenger safety and convenience. The uniform dress code assigns specific colors to vendors based on the platform number, making it easier for passengers and railway staff to distinguish between authorized and unauthorized vendors.
According to Rohit Malviya, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Kota division, vendors are now required to wear specific colored T-shirts and pants corresponding to their designated platform:
- Platform 1: Black T-shirt
- Platform 2/3: Orange T-shirt
- Platform 4: Blue T-shirt
- All platforms: Black pants
Additionally, each vendor’s uniform includes printed details such as their name, unit ID, and platform number, ensuring transparency and accountability. Vendors are also issued color-coded identity cards—red for morning shift, green for evening shift, and blue for night shift—which they must wear visibly during their assigned shifts.
“This initiative aims to streamline vendor operations and improve food safety standards at railway stations,” remarked Malviya. “Regular surprise inspections by commercial officers and food inspectors are being conducted to enforce compliance and promptly address any complaints regarding food quality.”
Currently, the Kota division operates 66 licensed food stalls across its major stations, ensuring that passengers have access to hygienic and regulated food options during their travels. The introduction of the uniform dress code has received positive feedback from passengers and railway personnel alike, who appreciate the clarity it brings in identifying authorized vendors and maintaining order on platforms.
In addition to enhancing passenger experience, the uniform dress code system also empowers Railway Protection Force personnel to swiftly identify and address instances of illegal vending, thereby bolstering overall security measures at railway stations.
As Indian Railways continues to implement these proactive measures, stakeholders anticipate further improvements in service quality and passenger satisfaction across its extensive network. The initiative reflects the railway’s commitment to modernizing operations and ensuring a safe and reliable travel experience for all commuters.
