Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a series of ambitious infrastructure projects collectively valued at over Rs 29,400 crores in Mumbai, Maharashtra, marking a significant stride towards enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries and stakeholders, PM Modi expressed his elation at the opportunity to launch and dedicate multiple projects aimed at bolstering road, railway, and port infrastructure in and around Mumbai. These initiatives are poised to bridge critical gaps in transportation networks, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people across the region.
Among the key projects inaugurated by PM Modi is the Thane Borivali Tunnel Project, a monumental endeavor costing Rs. 16,600 crores. Spanning 11.8 kilometers beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this twin tube tunnel is set to create a direct corridor linking Western Express Highway at Borivali to Thane Ghodbander Road. Anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Thane and Borivali by approximately 1 hour, the project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance commuter convenience.
Additionally, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, with an investment exceeding Rs. 6300 crore. Stretching over 6.65 kilometers, the GMLR aims to connect Western Express Highway at Goregaon to Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, thereby augmenting connectivity and facilitating seamless transit across Mumbai’s metropolitan area. This strategic initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing accessibility to the proposed new airport in Navi Mumbai and the vital Pune Mumbai Expressway, thereby catalyzing regional economic development.
Further underscoring the infrastructural overhaul, PM Modi inaugurated the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard remodelling initiative aims to optimize rail operations by segregating long-distance and suburban train traffic, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing congestion. Simultaneously, the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal, covering an expansive area of 32,600 square meters, is expected to emerge as a crucial hub for handling diverse commodities, generating significant employment opportunities and bolstering logistical capabilities.
In a bid to bolster Mumbai’s railway infrastructure, PM Modi dedicated upgraded facilities at key stations including Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, ensuring these hubs are equipped to accommodate longer trains and enhance passenger comfort and efficiency.
Moreover, PM Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a pioneering initiative with an allocation of approximately Rs. 5600 crore. Aimed at empowering youth aged 18 to 30 years through skill enhancement and industry exposure via structured internships, the program is poised to address unemployment challenges and harness India’s demographic dividend.
PM Modi’s comprehensive agenda during his Mumbai visit underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, economic growth, and youth empowerment. These transformative initiatives are set to propel Maharashtra towards sustainable development, fostering inclusive growth and positioning the state as a beacon of progress on the global stage.
