Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai heralded a new era of development with the inauguration of transformative infrastructure projects worth over Rs 29,400 crore, spanning critical sectors such as transportation and logistics. These initiatives are poised to significantly enhance connectivity and foster economic growth across Maharashtra, solidifying the region’s position as a hub of progress and innovation.
A centerpiece of PM Modi’s visit was the launch of the Thane Borivali Tunnel Project, a monumental undertaking valued at Rs. 16,600 crores. Spanning 11.8 kilometers beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this twin tube tunnel will establish a vital link between Western Express Highway at Borivali and Thane Ghodbander Road. Expected to reduce travel time by up to 1 hour between Thane and Borivali, the project promises to ease traffic congestion and improve commuter convenience significantly.
In parallel, PM Modi inaugurated the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, with an investment exceeding Rs. 6300 crore. Stretching 6.65 kilometers, the GMLR aims to connect Western Express Highway at Goregaon to Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, enhancing connectivity and facilitating seamless transit across Mumbai’s metropolitan area. This strategic initiative is set to bolster accessibility to the proposed new airport in Navi Mumbai and the vital Pune Mumbai Expressway, stimulating regional economic development.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard remodelling initiative aims to optimize rail operations by segregating long-distance and suburban train traffic, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing congestion. Simultaneously, the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal, covering an expansive area of 32,600 square meters, is expected to emerge as a pivotal hub for handling diverse commodities, generating significant employment opportunities and bolstering logistical capabilities.
Furthermore, PM Modi inaugurated upgraded facilities at Mumbai’s key railway stations. New platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extended platforms 10 & 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station are designed to accommodate longer trains, thereby increasing passenger capacity and operational efficiency.
In a proactive move to empower the youth, PM Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, allocating approximately Rs. 5600 crore for skill enhancement and industry exposure through structured internships. Aimed at youth aged 18 to 30 years, this initiative is set to equip them with the necessary skills and experience to thrive in diverse sectors of the economy, thereby addressing unemployment and contributing to India’s demographic dividend.
PM Modi’s comprehensive agenda during his Mumbai visit underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, economic prosperity, and youth empowerment. These initiatives are poised to accelerate Maharashtra’s growth trajectory, fostering inclusive development and positioning the state as a beacon of progress on the global stage.
