In a significant move, the Rajasthan government has announced that it will provide 300 units of electricity for free to its residents for the next 25 years. This decision is expected to bring relief to many households in the state.
A Step Towards Sustainable Energy
The government’s initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana, under which solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of houses at no cost to the homeowner. The generated electricity will then be used to power the homes, with any excess being taken by the government.
This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 50,000 families in Bikaner alone, particularly those whose monthly electricity consumption is 300 units or less. The move is also expected to alleviate the financial burden on families who currently pay around 2000 rupees per month for the same amount of electricity.
Solar Energy: A Bright Future
Rajasthan, especially the western region and Bikaner, is known for its sandy terrain and abundant sunlight, with the sun shining brightly for 325 days out of the year. This makes it an ideal location for harnessing solar energy. Several renowned companies have already set up their plants in the region, taking advantage of the ample private and government land available.
According to a report by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Rajasthan has an installed solar energy capacity of 7,738 megawatts, placing it at the forefront of solar energy production in the country.
A Long-Term Solution
The government’s decision to provide free electricity is not just a short-term relief measure but a long-term solution to the state’s energy crisis. The current debt on the state’s electricity companies is over 1 lakh 39 thousand rupees, and the state is only able to produce electricity at 55% capacity. By promoting solar energy, the government hopes to reduce the pressure on the existing electricity supply and decrease the need to purchase expensive electricity from outside.
The Rajasthan government’s initiative is a significant step towards a sustainable and economically viable future, bringing the benefits of solar energy to the doorsteps of its residents.
