Special Farewell: Bhutan King Bids Adieu to PM Modi at Airport

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi bid farewell to Bhutan on Saturday after a two-day state visit, expressing gratitude for the warm hospitality and reaffirming India’s unwavering commitment as a reliable friend and partner to the Himalayan kingdom.

In a gesture symbolizing the strong bond between the two nations, His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay personally escorted Prime Minister Modi at the airport. Reflecting on his visit, PM Modi described it as “very special” and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet with Bhutanese leaders, including His Majesty the King and Prime Minister Tobgay.

During the visit, PM Modi inaugurated the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital alongside Prime Minister Tobgay. The hospital, fully funded by the Indian government, stands as a testament to the strong bilateral cooperation in healthcare. PM Modi also announced a substantial assistance package of 10,000 crores for Bhutan’s 13th five-year plan, emphasizing India’s commitment to Bhutan’s development.

The highlight of the visit was Prime Minister Modi being conferred with the ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo,’ Bhutan’s highest civilian honor, making him the first foreign dignitary to receive this prestigious award. The Order of the Druk Gyalpo is a symbol of lifetime achievement, underscoring PM Modi’s significant contributions to strengthening India-Bhutan ties.

Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Tobgay hailed PM Modi as a “friend and elder brother,” highlighting the warm reception accorded to him by the people of Bhutan.

During discussions, PM Modi and Prime Minister Tobgay reviewed bilateral energy cooperation, particularly focusing on the Punatsangchhu-I and Punatsangchhu-II hydro-electric projects. Both leaders affirmed the potential of the India-Bhutan energy partnership to enhance energy security, boost economies, generate employment, and contribute to industrial and financial capacities.

As Prime Minister Modi departed for Delhi, he took to social media to express his gratitude for the special gesture extended by His Majesty the King of Bhutan, further solidifying the close ties between the two nations.

The successful conclusion of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan reaffirms the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between India and Bhutan, setting a strong foundation for continued cooperation and mutual prosperity in the years ahead.
