UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy concluded a productive diplomatic visit to India, aimed at strengthening ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation between the two nations. Lammy’s visit, the first of its kind by the Labour government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, focused on enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with India across various sectors.
During his meetings with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lammy underscored the mutual commitment to deepen economic engagement and strategic collaboration. Discussions centered on advancing the bilateral Technology Security Initiative and making substantial progress towards finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which promises to unlock significant opportunities for trade and investment between the UK and India.
“The discussions have been constructive and forward-looking, reflecting our shared vision for a robust partnership that embraces innovation and addresses global challenges,” Lammy stated following the meetings.
Lammy also highlighted the importance of fostering partnerships in key areas such as green technologies, economic security, and global health. Both sides expressed a keen interest in leveraging their respective strengths to tackle pressing global issues and promote sustainable development.
The visit underscored the pivotal role of the ‘Living Bridge’ – the Indian diaspora in the UK, which continues to play a crucial role in enhancing bilateral relations through cultural exchange and economic contributions.
“The Indian diaspora serves as a vital link between our nations, enriching our societies and contributing to our shared prosperity,” Lammy acknowledged, recognizing their significant impact on bilateral ties.
In addition to governmental engagements, Lammy engaged with business leaders and stakeholders from the climate sector to explore avenues for collaboration in renewable energy, technology transfer, and healthcare innovation. His visit set the stage for forging new partnerships that are poised to drive economic growth and promote technological advancements in both countries.
Looking forward, Lammy expressed optimism about the future trajectory of UK-India relations, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation in achieving mutual goals.
“As we navigate a rapidly evolving global landscape, the UK and India are committed to building a resilient partnership that fosters innovation, prosperity, and security for our citizens,” Lammy affirmed, highlighting the enduring commitment to deepening and diversifying bilateral ties.
